New Skills = New Career Field

Carol Chia
Medical Informatics Reporting Analyst
AltaMed Health Services

Carol Chia was considering options for the next step in her career as a program analyst when she discovered CSUF’s Certificate in Healthcare Information Technology (HIT). “Healthcare was becoming a hot topic and I decided to explore this career field.”

The HIT program was created to meet the demand for electronic health record conversion and maintenance—due to federal legislation requiring all patient records to be converted to an electronic format. The goal of the program is to train professionals with strong technical knowledge and healthcare industry savvy to identify and implement HIT solutions.

Carol enjoyed “the opportunities to hear about healthcare issues not only from the instructors, but also from my classmates who were professionals in the industry.” And she “especially enjoyed the interactions between instructors and students.”

As a result of Carol’s newly acquired skills, she has a new job in a new field. “I was able to get a job offer at AltaMed Health Services right after I completed the certificate,” she says. “And I’m working as a medical informatics reporting analyst. What I learned in the HIT program helped me understand the healthcare reform that I am currently dealing with, as well as its impact on my company’s member enrollment.”
