building blocks you’ll need to excel as a teacher in California schools. Our Single
Subject Credential Prerequisites
program enables you to be a successful educator and helps you get started on your teaching
credential.
Our program provides a foundation in teaching and fosters the critical, creative thinking needed to meet the unique challenges facing California secondary-level teachers. During the first course you will receive an introduction into secondary education.
As you progress through the program, you will learn various theories necessary for
succeeding as an educator in California, including adolescent development, diversity
and strategies
for improving literacy.
This program’s four courses will introduce and prepare you to the world of teaching,
specifically
in the culturally diverse California environment.
The Teaching Experience: Participation
This class provides an overview of the history, philosophy and sociology of secondary
education.
The course covers California Teaching Performance Expectations and assessment, content
standards and major curriculum reform documents. Participants will perform observation
in a
middle school and a high school for a total of 45 hours.
Adolescent Development
In this course students will examine the biological, cognitive and sociocultural development
of
adolescents, including contexts of adolescent development and health and safety issues.
Developing Literacy in Secondary Schools in Secondary Education
This course provides strategies for developing content-based reading/writing abilities,
comprehension skills and vocabulary of secondary students, as well as diagnostic assessment
strategies. Methods of teaching reading, writing and language skills for English learners
and
speakers will also be covered.
Diversity in Secondary Schools
In this course you will learn strategies for teaching special populations in general
education
classrooms, with an emphasis on educational equity and diversity. You will learn methods
for
providing all students equitable access to core curricula, and examine how diversity
in California
society shapes teaching, learning, personal and institutional bias.
