3 Reasons Why A College Degree Is Worth The Cost

Three men discussing at an outdoor informational booth on a college campusA college degree remains one of the most valuable and transformative investments a person can make. There are three reasons why it is worth the cost.

1. Higher Return on Investment

According to the 2025 U.S. Census Bureau, households headed by someone with a bachelor's degree earned a median income of $132,700 in 2024, compared to $58,410 for households headed by someone with only a high school diploma. This represents a 27% swing in favor of a bachelor's degree completion.

Research from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) shows that college graduates work higher quality jobs, see improved life outcomes such as home ownership, and experience greater security, especially during recessions.

2. Prepares You for Professional Careers

The California State University system is well known for its in-depth, quality programs. CSUF maintains one of the lowest tuition rates among four-year public universities nationwide. With over 100 degree programs across eight colleges, CSUF prepares graduates to lead in industries such as technology, business, engineering, healthcare, education, and the arts.

3. One Door Opens Many More

In a graduate outcomes survey, over 70% of alumni reported being employed or pursuing advanced degrees within a year of graduation. Many remain in California, contributing directly to the state's workforce and economy.

University Extension's various bachelor's and master's programs help students and working professionals gain in-demand skills, as well as Open University courses, certificates, and Summer and Winter Sessions.

So, yes, a degree is worth the cost.

A CSUF degree is not an expense; it’s an enduring asset, one that grows in value over time and continues to benefit our graduates, their families, and California’s future.
