Is a Degree Really Worth the Cost?

Three men discussing at an outdoor informational booth on a college campusAs tuition, living costs, and new educational alternatives continue to rise, it’s no surprise that many students and families are asking: Is earning a college degree still worth it? At Cal State Fullerton (CSUF), we believe that a college degree remains one of the most valuable and transformative investments a person can make.

The Economic Case

National and state data continue to show that higher education pays off. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2025), households headed by someone with a bachelor’s degree earned a median income of $132,700 in 2024, compared to $58,410 for households headed by someone with only a high school diploma (U.S. Census Bureau, 2025). This represents a 27% swing in favor of bachelor’s degree completion.

In California, a recent EdSource analysis found that graduates from most four-year universities earn enough within a decade to offset the cost of their degrees. The same report, based on the State Opportunity Index from Strada, showed that nearly 80% of bachelor’s degree holders see a positive financial return within ten years (Strada, 2025).

The numbers tell a consistent story. Over a lifetime, college graduates earn more, experience greater job stability, and are better positioned to weather economic shifts.

A Smarter Investment at CSUF

Across the United States, the California State University system is well known for its in-depth, quality programs. As part of the California State University system, CSUF maintains one of the lowest tuition rates among four-year public universities nationwide.

CSUF also delivers measurable outcomes. In a graduate outcomes survey, over 70% of alumni reported being employed or pursuing advanced degrees within a year of graduation. Many remain in California, contributing directly to the state’s workforce and economy (Alumni Outcomes Report, 2021).

With over 100 degree programs (CSUF Degrees and Majors, 2025) across eight colleges, CSUF prepares graduates to lead in industries such as technology, business, engineering, healthcare, education, and the arts. All of these sectors drive California’s growth and innovation. In fact, California’s economy is fourth in the world, only behind the United States, China, and Germany (Newsom, 2025).

More Than Earnings

While financial return is important, the value of a college degree extends far beyond salary. Research from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) shows that college graduates work higher quality jobs, see improved life outcomes such as home ownership, and greater security especially during recessions, in their career path (PPIC, 2024).

At Cal State Fullerton, our students don’t just learn specialized skills—they develop the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and collaborate effectively. These are the competencies employers say they value most and the qualities that allow our graduates to adapt and lead in an evolving world.

Context Matters

Every student’s path is unique, and the value of a degree depends on informed choices. Factors like major selection, completion rates, and net cost (tuition plus living expenses minus aid) all shape long-term outcomes. A 2024 Forbes analysis of California programs found that some majors lead to faster returns than others, but nearly all produce long-term benefits (Forbes, 2024).

At CSUF University Extension, we help students make these intentional choices by aligning programs with workforce demand, offering hands-on experiences like internships and research, and providing college advising and financial guidance every step of the way.

The Titan Advantage

CSUF’s commitment to affordability, access, and impact ensures that a Titan degree continues to open doors. From first-generation college students to working professionals, our students graduate ready to build meaningful careers and stronger communities.

A Cal State Fullerton education is about creating opportunity, mobility, and a foundation for lifelong success.

The Bottom Line

So, is a degree worth the cost? At Cal State Fullerton, the data, the outcomes, and the stories of our alumni all point to the same conclusion: yes.

A CSUF degree is not an expense; it’s an enduring asset, one that grows in value over time and continues to benefit our graduates, their families, and California’s future.
