I Earned a Non-Science Bachelor’s Degree and Now I Want to Be a Doctor
It’s a question we hear often at Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) University Extension:
“I didn’t major in science, but now I want to go to medical school. Is it too late?”
The good news is that it’s never too late. Every year, students from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds take the first step toward a medical career through our Pre-Health Professions Postbaccalaureate Program.
If you’ve earned a non-science bachelor’s degree and feel called to medicine, here’s how you can make that dream a reality.
Step 1: Understand What Medical Schools Require
Medical schools welcome applicants from all majors, but they expect a strong foundation in the sciences. Most require:
- General Biology with lab
- General and Organic Chemistry with lab
- Physics with lab
- Biochemistry
- Math and English coursework
If your undergraduate degree didn’t include these, you’ll need to complete them before applying. That’s where CSUF’s Pre-Health Professions Postbaccalaureate Program comes in.
Step 2: Bridge the Gap with CSUF’s Pre-Health Professions Postbaccalaureate Program
Our Pre-Health Professions Postbaccalaureate Program is designed for college graduates, including those from non-science backgrounds, who want to prepare for medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, or other health professional schools.
Through the program, you’ll:
- Complete all required science prerequisites in a structured, supportive environment.
- Receive individualized academic advising and MCAT preparation guidance.
- Participate in health-related workshops and advising sessions.
- Build a strong, competitive application for professional schools.
Many of our students come from fields like business, psychology, education, communications, and the arts — and they successfully transition into medicine and healthcare every year.
Step 3: Prepare for the MCAT
Once you’ve completed your foundational coursework, the next major milestone is the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Our advising team can help you create a personalized study plan and connect you with prep resources.
Students from non-science majors often excel on the MCAT because of their strong reading comprehension, critical analysis, and communication skills — all essential qualities in future physicians.
Step 4: Gain Clinical and Volunteer Experience
Medical schools value applicants who understand patient care beyond the classroom. During your time at CSUF, you will want to volunteer or take on clinical hours through local hospitals, clinics, and community health organizations.
These hands-on experiences not only strengthen your application but also deepen your understanding of the human side of medicine.
Step 5: Leverage Your Unique Background
Your non-science background is your strength. Medical schools seek students who can think critically, communicate clearly, and empathize with diverse populations. Whether your first degree is in psychology, marketing, music, or English, you bring a perspective that enriches the healthcare field.
Our advisors and workshops will help you frame your personal story and highlight how your journey prepares you to serve patients with compassion and insight.
Step 6: Stay Focused, and Know You’re Supported
Transitioning to a medical career is a big step, but you don’t have to do it alone. CSUF’s supportive learning environment, experienced faculty, and dedicated advisors are here to guide you every step of the way.
From your first science course to your medical school interview, you’ll be part of a community that believes in your goals and celebrates your success.
