5 Benefits to Look for in a Job

A counselor recommends a career book to a person in the Cal State Fullerton Career Center.

When reviewing a job offer, consider more than the salary. Benefits can make a huge difference in your overall quality of life and financial stability. Here are a few areas of importance.

1. Health & Well-being Coverage

Even if you’re covered under a parent or spouse’s plan, know what your employer offers. Look for low-cost or optional plans in case you age out of your current coverage.

2. Retirement / Long-Term Financial Security

Check if your employer partners with financial investment companies such as Fidelity, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Edward Jones, LPL Financial, etc. A solid retirement plan (e.g., a 401(k) or equivalent) suggests that an employer is committed to your future.

3. Paid Time Off (PTO), Holidays & Work-Life Balance

Find out how PTO is accrued, whether unused days roll over, and what flexibility exists around remote/hybrid work. Also evaluate whether there are perks such as commuter/transportation subsidies, gym/fitness reimbursements, pet insurance, volunteer time off, or flexible “lifestyle” budgets.

4. Professional Development & Growth Opportunities

Does your employer offer training, certifications, conferences, or tuition reimbursement? Do they invest in your professional growth through mentorship programs or by clarifying internal mobility?

For example, University Extension offers Leadership Development for Public Agencies for those who work in the public sector and are paid by their employer.

5. Family-Friendly & Life Event Support

Maternity/paternity leave, adoption assistance, child-care support, and family health coverage matter especially if you have, or plan to have, dependents. Life insurance, disability insurance, and “safety net” benefits help protect you in unforeseen circumstances.

Even if you don’t need every benefit right now, choosing an employer with strong options sets you up for long term success.
