Meet the Instructors

The instructors of CSUF’s Accelerated Masters in Applied Computer Science program are experienced professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the classroom. Their passion for teaching and real-world experience in the field of computer science make them valuable mentors for students, helping to prepare them for successful careers.

Dr. Christopher Ryu

Dr. Christopher Ryu

Dr. Christopher Ryu is a Professor of Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. His research areas include machine learning, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, computational finance, and software design and architecture. He has published numerous research articles and received grants. In addition to his academic experience, Dr. Ryu has many years of industry experience developing large-scale software systems and applications running on various platforms, including the cloud. He has helped many local companies in building software systems to support their business processes and operations.

Dr. Yun Tian

Dr. Yun Tian

Dr. Yun Tian is an Associate Professor of Computer Science. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Auburn University. Her research interests include cloud computing, mobile computing, Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence for cybersecurity. She brings real-world tools and systems to her classes and emphasizes real-world problem-solving skills in her teaching. She has over 30 peer-reviewed publications from the projects conducted in her fields, and many of the papers were co-authored with her graduate and undergraduate students.

Dr. Anand Panangadan

Dr. Anand Panangadan

Dr. Anand Panangadan is an Associate Professor of Computer Science. He conducts research at CSUF with undergraduate and graduate students in applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. He is applying techniques from these fields to problems in homelessness, transportation, healthcare, earth science, sensor networks, and robotics. He is also interested in automated analysis of online social media communications for understanding the spread of beliefs related to public transportation. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles. He holds two U.S. patents on sensor data processing. He is the Principal Investigator on grants from NSF, USDA, Air Force Research Laboratory, and the University of California Center on Economic Competitiveness in Transportation (US Department of Transportation and Caltrans). He has received education-related grants from Cisco Systems and GE Digital and is a recipient of the NASA Space Act Award.

Dr. Doina Bein

Dr. Doina Bein

Dr. Doina Bein is a Professor in the Computer Science Department. Her research interests include machine learning and data science, automatic dynamic decision-making, computational sensing, distributed algorithms, energy-efficient wireless networks, and secure network communication. Her research was supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and private companies. She has an extensive publication record; four of her conference papers have received the best paper awards. She is the faculty advisor of the ACM Women in Computing (ACMW) local chapter, which organizes several outreach activities to inspire Girl Scouts in STEM education and has won several campus awards, the Presidential Award from the Girl Scouts of America, and the 2018 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Dr. Kevin Wortman

Dr. Kevin Wortman

Dr. Kevin Wortman is a Professor of Computer Science at California State University, Fullerton. He holds a Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine. His professional interests include computer science education, algorithm design and analysis, and data structures. He routinely teaches introductory computer programming, data structures, algorithms, and theoretical computer science. Dr. Wortman’s service is centered on curriculum development and DEI initiatives in computing programs.

Dr. James Choi

Dr. James Choi

Dr. James Choi is active in teaching and research in the areas of secure software development, software maintenance, reverse software engineering, software configuration management, modeling, and simulation, and is an author of numerous research papers and presentations. He has received research funding from industry leaders such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop Corporation, Naval Ocean System Center, AT&T, Pacific Bell, and TRW Defense Systems Group. Dr. Choi earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Southern California, USA. He served as the computer science department chair and also program coordinator for the online Master Software Engineering program at Cal State Fullerton.

Dr. Chang-Hyun Jo

Dr. Chang-Hyun Jo

Dr. Chang-Hyun Jo is a Professor of Computer Science at Cal State Fullerton, where he teaches software engineering. He has published more than 70 technical papers in journals, conferences, and international standards. His teaching and research interests include software process, software architectural design, process assessment, and process improvement.
