"Exactly the Program I Needed"

Jennifer Triplet
Community College Adjunct Instructor

“I can honestly say that having a reading certificate has not only improved my level of reading instruction but has made me more marketable as I apply for positions,“ says Jennifer Triplett, currently teaching as an adjunct instructor at El Camino, Compton and Santa Monica community colleges.

“I was told about the Postsecondary Literacy and Learning Certificate by a colleague,” Jennifer explains. “Intrigued, I looked into the program and quickly realized that it was exactly the kind of program that I needed to advance my ability to teach reading at the college level.”

The curriculum in this program provides students with research based, cutting-edge postsecondary literacy and learning curriculum, as well as insights into adult learning theory. In addition, the totally online format of the program provides access to a national and international audience.

“Throughout my time in this program I was able to collaborate with many other community college instructors and we were able to share experiences and advice through our weekly peer online discussion boards,” Jennifer says. Other opportunities for online collaboration in the program include wikis, blogs and group pages.

The PLL certificate is meant for people who already have an appropriate Master’s degree in a subject area other than reading. Jennifer has a Master’s of Arts and wanted to attain the additional certification to teach reading at the college level in California.

“The instructors in this program were excellent and were always available if you had a question or needed help with an assignment,” Jennifer explains. “They usually responded immediately and were constantly giving out great feedback on our assignments and adding to the discussion boards.”
