Course Number: SHSS 6708 (2.1 CEUs/21 Hours)
An understanding of the medical system, the ability to bridge the linguistic and culture gap between provider and patient, and awareness of the active role healthcare interpreters engage in during an exchange contribute to the success of interpreted sessions. An overview of the American healthcare system and how interpreters function in a variety of health care settings will help participants learn and define the interpreter's role, responsibilities, and boundaries. Case scenarios which analyze the complex linguistic, cultural and ethical challenges of interpreting in healthcare including doctor-patient appointments, hospitals and mental health counseling sessions will provide further discussion in applying problem-solving strategies.
