Growing as an Effective Educator

What motivated you to enroll in CSUF’s Teacher Induction Program?
When it came time to enroll in a teacher induction program to clear my California credential, I did my due diligence by researching both in-person and online options in the area. I ultimately chose CSUF because of the Early Completion Option (ECO), which aligned with my timeline and professional goals. Additionally, my partner is a professor at CSUDH, so I felt a strong connection to the CSU system and its values.
Was there a particular course or assignment within the program that was particularly impactful or memorable for you?
One of the most impactful experiences for me was administering my action plan during the final course of the program. I conducted a comparative analysis of two math programs by giving pre- and post-tests to two different sections of a course I teach. This allowed me to measure the impact of each program on student achievement. Stepping into the role of investigator and engaging in reflective practice made the process especially meaningful. This experience deepened my interest in collecting data on student performance to inform and improve my teaching.
How did the program’s structure and support systems (e.g., mentorship, faculty guidance) contribute to your development as an educator?
Having regular, dedicated time to meet with my mentor was invaluable for my growth. These sessions gave me the opportunity to reflect on my teaching, explore new strategies, and get feedback on areas for improvement. In the final semester, I especially appreciated Professor Green’s support and flexibility as I fine-tuned the details of my action plan.
How has completing the program influenced your teaching practices or approach in the classroom?
One of the most important takeaways from the program was learning to identify students with the greatest needs and trying out strategies to better support them. The emphasis on reflective practice had a lasting impact on me as an educator and, I believe, helped improve student access to learning in my classroom.
How did the program help you address real-world classroom challenges?
In one course, we completed a group project focused on student attendance. As someone who is data-driven, I found the research and analysis involved in that project to be particularly enlightening. It provided practical insights into attendance issues and strategies for addressing them. I’ve already implemented several of those strategies with students who struggle with consistent attendance.
How did it influence your approach to classroom management, lesson planning, or student engagement?
The focus on attendance significantly influenced my approach to lesson planning. I became more intentional about making learning accessible to students who missed class. By integrating more technology into my instruction, I was able to support both in-person and absent students. This shift allowed for greater collaboration and engagement, ensuring that students could participate and stay caught up regardless of their attendance.
What advice would you offer to educators considering enrolling in CSUF’s Teacher Induction Program?
I would encourage educators to seriously consider CSUF’s program—it is thoughtfully designed and provides valuable opportunities for growth. For those considering the Early Completion Option (ECO), know that while it is intensive, it’s also incredibly rewarding if you’re prepared to commit the time and effort. The program offers flexibility and opportunities for collaboration, and I truly feel it helped me become a more reflective and effective educator. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to clear their credentials while growing professionally.
