“I was particularly drawn to the  smaller cohort model, which fosters meaningful relationships and a close-knit learning  environment.”

Why did you choose CSUF for your Masters in Social Work program?

I chose CSUF’s Master of Social Work program because of its flexible part-time schedule, which aligned perfectly with my professional responsibilities and personal needs. As a commuter student, attending a local university was important, and CSUF offered not only convenience but also a strong academic reputation and competitive program. I was particularly drawn to the  smaller cohort model, which fosters meaningful relationships and a close-knit learning environment. Additionally, my husband is a two-time CSUF graduate, and it had always been a dream of mine to become a Titan as well, so choosing CSUF was a deeply personal and purposeful decision.

What did you enjoy about being in a cohort?

The cohort model has been one of the most impactful parts of my MSW journey. It brought a sense of consistency, community, and support that I didn’t anticipate but am incredibly grateful for. From day one, we weren't just classmates, we became a family. We celebrate each other’s wins, support one another through challenges, and share not only the classroom experience but also life outside of it. This structure has allowed for deep connections, emotional safety, and genuine friendships that I know will last beyond graduation. The sense of belonging has truly enriched my academic and personal growth.

You spent time in Vietnam this summer — can you share what that experience was like?

My experience in Vietnam was nothing short of incredible, more meaningful than I could have ever imagined. As an undergraduate student, I always dreamed of studying abroad, but it never felt within reach. Thanks to Professor Tran and Dr. Bailey, that dream became a reality. We had the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in Vietnamese history and culture, through the food, everyday life, community excursions, and academic visits. Riding mopeds through bustling streets, exploring alleyways, engaging with local universities, and visiting nonprofit organizations offered an authentic, eye-opening perspective. It wasn’t just a trip, it was a life-changing experience that gave me insight into another culture and helped me better understand myself as both a student and a future social worker.

How did your time in Vietnam connect to or enrich your studies in social work?

Vietnam deepened my understanding of cultural humility and the importance of context in social work practice. Being immersed in a different cultural landscape challenged me to reflect on my assumptions, broaden my worldview, and approach social work from a truly global perspective. Our conversations with local professionals, students, and community leaders highlighted both the universal values and unique challenges of social work across cultures. This experience emphasized the importance of cultural competence, adaptability, and empathy, qualities that are essential in any social work setting. It also reinforced my commitment to advocacy and culturally responsive practice, which I will carry with me into my future career.

What advice do you have for students entering the program?

My biggest advice is to enter the program with an open mind and an open heart. This journey will challenge you personally, academically, and professionally, and that’s where the growth happens. Be kind to yourself, give yourself grace, and remember that you are here to learn. Stay organized, use a planner, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Lean into your cohort; they are your greatest support system. Take breaks, deep breaths, and most importantly, set boundaries to protect your well-being. Keeping your cup full allows you to pour into others which is the heart of social work.

What are your plans after completing the program?

After completing the MSW program, I plan to continue working with youth, adolescents, and young adults. I’m passionate about providing therapeutic services that empower and support our next generation. My goal is to pursue and obtain the LCSW credential and work in either school-based or community mental health settings within my community. I hope to be a source of support, advocacy, and healing for young people navigating complex challenges and to give back to the community that shaped me.
